Tasting is the first step to enjoying wine on a deeper level. While it may seem daunting, following three simple steps—Look, Smell, and Taste—will reveal the wine’s unique personality.
Step 1: Look (Observe the Appearance)
Tilt the glass slightly against a white background to check the color and clarity.
- Red Wine: Youthful red wines show purple or ruby tones, while aged ones lean towards brick red or amber.
- White Wine: Light whites show pale straw-yellow, whereas oak-aged or matured ones present deep gold.
Step 2: Smell (Inhale the Aromas)
Sniff first without swirling (First Nose), then swirl the glass gently to oxygenate the wine and sniff again (Second Nose). Look for aromas of fresh fruits, flowers, herbs, and oaky notes like vanilla or spice.
Step 3: Taste (Savor the Palate)
Take a small sip and roll it around your mouth. Pay attention to the balance of sweetness, acidity, tannins (astringency), alcohol warmth, and the length of the finish.
Just paying attention to these three steps makes your evening glass of wine incredibly rewarding. Cheers!
